Fridays 13:00 – 16:00, HIT H12

Learn 3D, can be counted as course elective too!
Keywords: Perspective Illusions, 3D Modeling / Rendering, Blender 3D, Percent for Art (Kunst am Bau), Baden Stadtfest, VFX, Urban Scale Interaction/Animations

In the course you will learn about the key concepts of projection mapping and the open source software “Blender 3D”. You will produce animations that intend to alter the perceiption of a building’s facade or interact with the facade in a funny/graphical/informative way.

“Percent for art” / “Kunst am Bau” usually refers to art funded with a small percentage of large development projects. In case you decide to elaborate the designs of this course as a thesis elective, you will have the unique opportunity to perform your projections to a large audience at Stadtfest Baden (+/-one million people in one week in August 2012).

Using Blender you can either dig in deeper in what you already know about 3D visualization or use this opportunity to learn how to model and render in 3D from an animation point of view. This should be easily adoptable to your own projects and/or favourite 3D render software.

FS2011 FEB-MAY

The elective course introduces the new area of Information Architecture. The underlying example is the Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore with its three scales small, medium, and large. Inspired by numerous built and virtual examples, the course discusses the consequences when information space and physical architecture merge. The first part of the lecture describes origins, state-of-the-art, and application in architecture. The second part focuses on simulation, a method and technology that rapidly gains importance in the design of buildings and cities. In the third part guest lecturers will demonstrate the development and application of Information Architecture in practice.

The course is coordinated with “New Methods in Urban Simulation and Modelling”.

The weekly workshop “Articulating Urban Complexities” investigates the use of parametric design tools for urban design. The exercise addresses contemporary computational challenges in urban design in order to provide students with practical knowledge in the field of architecture.

Various parametric design and analysis tools as well as urban design proposals are developed during the workshop. The work on the design project is mainly performed using the Grasshopper plug-in for Rhino. Students learn how to build Grasshopper definitions from existing components. In order to meet specific urban design requirements, students also learn how to create custom Grasshopper components using the C# programming language.
For the production of images, the VRay rendering plug-in for Rhino is used in conjunction with Grasshopper in order to create rendered animations to emphasize the parametric nature of the designs.

The elective course on behalf of Thesis Elective with the topic FOR GARABAGE is focused on collaboration between students from different countries over distance using all the equipment of the Value Lab. From holding presentations and having discussions with Prague students we will go over to development of designs including the initial part of the design process: sketching. We will use the bright new application exclusively developed only for this purpose. The topic of garbage is a very painfull problem in all countries an we will try to find out the possible contribution of Architects. We will analyze the problem, discuss the solutions and design, vizualize and fabricate the visual outputs. We shall end up with an Exposition.
